Careers and Higher Education

Careers & Higher Education

The vast majority of our students go on to Higher Education.

We strive to ensure that Careers and Higher Education advice is geared to the individual needs of each student and so enable all our students to have the best possible chance of realising their ambitions.

Throughout Year 12 and 13 careers advice is offered by the UCAS Coordinator and Form Tutors during individual tutorials and Form meetings.  In addition, our in-house Careers Specialist provides weekly drop-in sessions as well as pre-arranged interviews.

Prior to joining the Sixth Form and on entry in September of Year 12, each student has an interview with a senior member of staff to discuss her career aspirations and establish a programme of study suited to her needs.  Careful consideration is given to subject choice based both on the student’s interests and aptitudes.

Preparation for UCAS begins in earnest in February of Year 12.  A special assembly is organised and an in-house booklet is distributed to students to provide them with a structure for research into universities and courses.

A programme of UCAS related events then takes place:

  • Introductory session to Apply (the UCAS online application system) is presented by our own Careers Specialist
  • Presentation “Why go to Uni?” led by Imperial College London
  • “How to write an effective personal statement” led by Imperial College London
  • Personal Statement workshops by our own Careers Specialist
  • Student Finance talk given led by Queen Mary University London

UCAS/HE Conventions are advertised in the Sixth Form Centre and publicity for University Open Days and Masterclasses is distributed to students.  Also, the most recent university prospectuses and other careers literature are displayed in the library and the students' study area.
