Title: CACHE Level 3 Award, Certificate and Diploma in Childcare & Education (Early Years Educator)

Entry Requirements        Prospective students will require A–C grades at GCSE in Maths and English with good communication skills. However, an interest in childcare is essential.

Course Content:  This qualification prepares students to work in a supervised capacity, with children and their families in a variety of settings and environments within the sector of Children’s services. The qualification is split into three stages;

Award: Students must achieve Units 1 and 2 to complete the Award

Certificate: Students must achieve Units 1-8 to complete the Certificate. Students have to complete approx 365 practical hours at a nursery placement.

Diploma: Students must achieve Units 9-15. Students also have to complete approx 540 practical hours at a nursery placement.

The course will be holistically delivered and assessment will be structured around the following units

Unit 1: Child development from conception to seven years  

Unit 2: Children’s health and well-being 

Unit 3: Providing safe environments for children

Unit 4: Child health  

Unit 5: Play and learning    

Unit 6: Understanding children’s additional needs        

Unit 7: Observation, assessment and planning   

Unit 8: Professional Practice Portfolio 1    

Unit 9: Supporting emergent literacy       

Unit 10: Supporting emergent mathematics      

Unit 11: Preparing for school readiness    

Unit 12: International perspectives

Unit 13: Reflective practice for professional development      

Unit 14: Professional partnerships in early years  

Unit 15: Professional Practice Portfolio 2  

Duration: 2 years

Placement hours:

Learners will be required to attend placement and work with different age ranges. A minimum of 750 placement hours will be required.

Assessment methods

To gain Early Years Educator qualification the learner will need to achieve the following.

All units will be internally assessed using a range of methods. All units will be graded A*-D.

Learners taking the Certificate must also complete an Effective Practice Study Task (externally set, externally marked)

Learners taking the Diploma must also complete an Effective Practice Study and one Extended Assessment Task (externally set, externally marked)


On successful completion of the Diploma students will be able to apply for entry into Higher Education. The Diploma also gives a license to practice for employment purposes. Learners’ will be able to enter the workforce as Early Years Educators and Management in a Nursery setting. Other related employment opportunities include Children’s nursing, General Nursing, Midwifery and Teaching. This is a very popular course.
