Year 8 students attend WE Day UK at Wembley Arena on 22nd March 2017

WE is a charity that works towards empowering young people to transform local and global communities by shifting from “me” thinking to “we” acting.  WE Day UK is a powerful, life-changing experience with world-renowned speakers and performers, mixed with real inspirational stories of change.  In particular, the year 8 students listened to a motivational talk by Kate Winslet who advocated a change from the impersonal to the personal asking the students to put down their mobile phones and communicate with each other face to face.  Savanah Ung said, “I agree with Kate because to have a better future, you must learn to put away all distractions”.  Another student felt this was a day where a diverse range of students can come together and celebrate stating “this is an event I will never forget, because I learnt fun is for everybody even you” (Isoji).

Imarni's Reflection

When we went to the Wembley Arena for the WE Day event people were very excited about what they would see and what would happen there, we could see that many of those at the event including us were full of anticipation because of what we expected to see and what we didn’t know was coming our way.  The event itself was very exciting and interesting because they had a lot of musical entertainment that kept us on our feet and a lot of informative talks that made us think, discuss and understand topics such as every child’s right to education and preserving our environment.

The hosts at the event gave us the ability to interact with each other throughout the whole day, and they spoke about the topics with enthusiasm, so we knew that every person that came onto the stage cared about what they had to say and wanted us to receive the information with open minds and to discuss our interpretations of what they were saying amongst ourselves.

The day left everyone thinking and willing to take home what we had learnt.  It was not one of those trips that you could just go on and you use your brain to think and then leave your thoughts in the building as soon as you leave.  It was a very intellectual and thought provoking trip that the girls and I are very thankful to have had the opportunity to attend.
