The
Music Department plays an important role in the life of Virgo Fidelis,
both in its Class Music and public performances that occur throughout the
year. There is a large Senior
Choir that sings at Concerts and School Masses and a Year 7 Choir
involving first-year pupils. There
are also various instrumental groups that meet regularly and class
orchestras giving all pupils the opportunity of performing to audiences.
Class
music (with pupils being taught in half-classes) is compulsory for the
first three years; these lessons are practical in content and use pitched
and un-pitched percussion together with electric keyboards.
Music is also available as an option for GCSE and A level and
features the key elements of listening, performing and composing.
As
well as Concerts, Musicals are sometimes performed in conjunction with the
Drama Department and recent productions include Oliver, Annie and Grease.
Individual lessons are given by specialist visiting teachers in Violin,
Cello, Flute, Oboe, Saxophone, Clarinet, Recorder, Guitar, Piano and
Keyboards. There are also
individual singing lessons and a number have passed Associated Board
examinations in recent years.
